From the State of Exhaustion, But Still Able to Puzzle Over How Everybody at Fox News is Perceived as Tarnished

Say the words "Fox News," and the baby seal clubbers say "fair and balanced" while the Communists say...well they say "Fascist."

Say the words "Greta Van Susteren," and I think of "ambulance chaser." Others, however, say "Fascist." They Get Letters links to a Roger Moore book review, and a Greta Van Susteren reply.

McCarthy's best friend, the man who loaned him a copy of Mein Kampf, was a fellow Wisconsin conservative, Urban Van Susteren. Progressives won't be surprised that Greta Van Susteren, a Fox News mainstay and Urban's daughter, grew up in a home with a cherished edition of Hitler's famous template for fascist political organization and bigoted scapegoating.
It is no secret that my father — who died in the 1980s — was Senator Joe McCarthy's campaign manager in 1946....After McCarthy was elected in 1947, McCarthy moved to Washington, D.C., and my father stayed home in Wisconsin to raise a family. My father was not on his staff....

A few years back I wrote a book – "My Turn at the Bully Pulpit" — which discusses in one chapter Senator McCarthy. I condemn what he did and Moore could easily have picked up my book and checked it out....

The light in which Moore holds me is wrong. It is false. It is meant to harm. It was not intended to be fair or right. The false message he seeks to convey about me — that is now on the Internet — is obvious and does not need a translation or explanation. Mr. Moore did no investigation — he committed a tort by putting me in a false light. In my opinion, it is malicious. Obviously he has never watched our show.

Obviously. Unless you have the weird twisted view that Greta's non-stop coverage of Natalee Holloway is solely due to the dead teen's skin and hair color.

Tom McMahon met the elder Van Susteren:

Judge Urban Van Susteren, was an active player in Wisconsin political affairs who, among other things, managed Joe McCarthy's successful challenge to U.S. Sen. Robert M. La Follette Jr. in 1946. Many years later as a high school senior I had a chance to go up to Appleton to talk to the Judge for a paper I was writing about the Senator. He was gracious enough to spend a couple of hours with me, and I left with insights into the Senator and that era that I could never have gotten just from a book.

Now it's many years later again, and one regret I have is never having thanked the Judge for his time that day. Maybe it's part of growing older, but one of the things you realize later in life is that the truly great people make time for the people beneath them socially, whether it be a subordinate, the janitor, or a high school kid with more enthusiasm than knowledge.

And if the Van Susteren family truly is a bunch of fascists, then it appears that the fascist movement has infiltrated the Democratic Party:

Lise Van Susteren, a forensic psychiatrist and mother of three teenagers, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Maryland because the President and Congress have moved the country in the wrong direction....

She wants to address these problems in the U.S. Senate and affect real change on issues like health care and education, and to hold the President accountable for the conduct of the war in Iraq.

Lise’s father, Urban Van Susteren, ran successfully for public office as a judge in Wisconsin....Urban Van Susteren also holds a footnote in history as campaign manager for Senator Joe McCarthy, although he came to disagree with him....

The experiences of her mother-in-law Helen Covensky, a Holocaust survivor who lost her parents and 6 year-old sister to the Nazis, has had a profound impact on Lise, including on her understanding of how quickly the world can change and how we cannot take anything for granted.

As a former journalist, and a Christian, it irritates me that Fox is supposedly the only news network Christians are allowed to watch. As if they hold the corner market on truth. Geesh. But to demonize Greta because her father once worked for Joe McCarthy is absurd.

I think I've commented elsewhere on how Catholics are outside our simple limited-brain secular political spectrum. Take my friend who used to campaign against abortions one day, and against nuclear weapons the next.

Equating Christianity with secular conservatism serves to co-opt Christianity to secular causes. I don't think Jesus had a specific stand on tax cuts.

Amen to that! It sickens me how Christianity has been hijacked by the right-wing nut jobs.
