Peaceful and Stuff

I was reading and viewing a Celebrity Smack post on Frances Bean and Courtney Love, and now I can't get the Unplugged version of "Polly" out of my head. Polly says her back hurts, indeed. It's a sad story:

The lyrics are based on a true story from 1987. It's about a 14 year old girl who was abducted by a man and driven around in his van. The man then tortured and raped her. The only chance she had of escaping was to pretend to come on to him and persuade him to untie her.

Unfortunately, the story gets worse, as Kurt reminded everyone in the liner notes to Insecticide that fans can sometimes be fanatic:

"Last year, a girl was raped by two wastes of sperm and eggs while they sang the lyrics to our song 'Polly.' I have a hard time carrying on knowing there are plankton like that in our audience. Sorry to be so anally P.C. but that's the way I feel."

But at least the original story ended well, as far as I know:

"Polly" is based on an actual incident which occurred in Tacoma in June of 1987. A Fourteen-year-old girl returning from a punk show at the Community World Theater was kidnapped by a man named Gerald Friend....She later escaped from his car when he stopped for gas. Friend was later arrested and eventually convicted and will likely spend the rest of his life in jail.
