Random Role...Random Religious Conflict

A followup on the post at the Paul Davidson blog. This new story is from Egypt Election, whatever that is.

Cruise 'Persuades Holmes to Reject Addict Role'

June 4 - Actress Katie Holmes has turned down the role of pop artist Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick in forthcoming movie Factory Girl--because the character's drug abuse reportedly goes against her boyfriend Tom Cruise's Scientology beliefs.

Director George Hickenlooper had lunch with Holmes in Los Angeles last month to discuss the possibility of her replacing Jude Law's fiancee Sienna Miller as Sedgwick, who died of an overdose of barbiturates in 1971.

But movie insiders claim the 26-year-old beauty decided against starring in the movie because Cruise--who has helped people fight drug addictions through his controversial religion--warned the part would be bad for her image.

Holmes' publicist confirms, "Katie is not attached to that project."

A source tells New York Post newspaper, "Edie was in and out of mental institutions and on all sorts of psychotropic drugs. Tom doesn't believe in those drugs because of his belief in Scientology."

Frankly, if I were a Scientologist, I would love to have my girlfriend play Edie Sedgwick. If I want to argue that psychotropic drugs are evil, I'd publicize Edie Sedgwick's death like there's no tomorrow. I can see Tommy's argument: "If Edie had talked to the space forces, she wouldn't have died."

But forget the Scientology talk - would the movie have been good for Holmes? She can't play a teenage girl forever - it would have given her some career growth.

Although I never saw it, and although it was apparently a stinker, I applauded Macaulay Culkin's appearaance in "The Good Son." It was a good attempt to diversify a career.

And just to tie everything together, remember that Macaulay's good friend Michael Jackson's ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley is/was a Scientologist. It's a small world after all.
