Random Australian Singer...Random Australian Singer

From ABC (not Disney, not Martin Fry):

The revelation that Kylie has been diagnosed with breast cancer has come as a surprise to many none more so than an Australian music guru who has known her for years.

Ian 'Molly' Meldrum says he heard the news "around quarter to three yesterday (Tuesday 17 May) afternoon. I was trying to get hold of Michael Gudinski, the promoter (and head of Kylie's label Mushroom Records) and I rang (his wife) Sue at home. Sue suddenly broke down and I said 'Sue, what on earth is wrong?' and she said 'look, it's not going to be released until four o'clock but we've heard some horrible news about one of our friends and your friend. Then she told me about it and it's the last thing I would have expected to hear."

Luckily, Kylie's diagnosis has come at an early stage meaning her chances of beating it are high. However, shockwaves still went around the world as fans started a mass expression of sympathy and well wishes. It also means disappointment for those fans with tickets to Kylie's Australian tour or the performance she was much looking forward to at the Glastonbury Festival. However, as Michael Gudinski has said, it was very Kylie Minogue to write her own press release and say that she was very disappointed to let her fans down.

"Kylie's always been one that has great care for her fans," Molly says. "She's one of the most down to earth people you could meet. You could never call Kylie an impossible diva!"

Despite the bad news Molly draws our attention to some positive things it is possible to take out of the situation. "She learnt about it here, and just prior to the tour, so her family and friends and obviously Michael and Sue and manager Terry Blamey (are here). And, ironically enough, Olivia Newton-John happened to be in town, so Kylie had lunch with Olivia and of course that was the best person she could speak to because Olivia went through the same thing."

The irony comes about because, as Molly explains, "Kylie's in fact been active with Olivia with her cause of raising awareness of breast cancer."...
