Katie Holmes is in Luuuv
Follow-up to my 6/7/2005 comment here.
Commenting on Tom Cruise's appearance on Oprah, havana8 stated the following at Words for My Enjoyment:
he's having a mid-life crisis trying to act the age of his 20-something girlfriend.
she is not so innocent, either. there is no poor katie here as look what she gets out of it. oh, and she wasn't uncomfortable or embarrassed on Oprah. she was playing it all up enjoying it all. there wasn't even a spot heightened colour on her face for someone supposedly embarrassed/shy about it all.... she is neither. she is a smart, ambitious girl who sees how this will change her life.
Havana8 was definitely right about that one. Katie Holmes said as much in an appearance on Access Hollywood:
By now, you’ve heard just how in love Tom Cruise is with his girlfriend of seven weeks, Katie Holmes.
But you haven’t really heard her side of this whole thing – until now.
Could Katie possibly feel just as strongly as Tom does? The answer is, “Yes.”
“I'm so happy. I mean I…I'm thrilled,” she said. “I'm so in love with Tom and that's all that I care about. He's just the most amazing man in the whole world.”...
Katie was amused by Tom’s recent antics on Oprah, which included jumping up and down on the sofa when asked what she means to him.
“I sat there and I was, like, ‘I am the luckiest woman in the whole world.’ That’s how I feel. When I saw him I was, like, ‘Tom, where’s the door?’ Oh, God, you know? I was excited, sure. I’m going to come. When Tom calls for me, I’m coming.”...
And the pundits are weighing in, as recorded by Eunnie Park at a North Jersey newspaper:
Everybody has a theory about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.
It could be love, says Dr. James Houran, chief psychologist for True.com, an online dating service.
Cruise has clearly lost his mind, says Morris Reid, a veteran celebrity adviser and political strategist.
And the most resonant cry of all: It's all for publicity, say polls conducted by People and Star magazines....
And then there are the less popular couples: Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, who started dating after Ford's 20-year marriage to writer-producer Melissa Mathison ended; Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, who hooked up while Federline's ex-girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson, was pregnant with their second child; Cruise and Holmes, who declared their love just weeks after Holmes broke her engagement to actor Chris Klein.
There is always a healthy dose of skepticism about rebound relationships. Even more so when the new coupling seems very sudden. But in the case of Cruise and Holmes - as well as Flockhart and Ford - there's also age-ism. The bigger the gap, the bigger the skepticism.
"They have nothing in common," says Reid. "She's 26. He's 43. His entire passion in life is Scientology - does she even know what that is?"
In both relationships, the partners are also separated by a significant difference in class. Ford and Cruise are classic A-list movie stars whose box office successes date back to the '70s and '80s. Meanwhile, Flockhart and Holmes are both marginal B-listers whose starts were in mildly successful television shows.
"It's almost as if with these sorts of things, we tend to think of one partner as not good enough for the other," says Houran. "Calista is not possibly good enough for Harrison Ford. Katie Holmes is certainly not up to Tom Cruise's level."
Given Cruise's past relationships - 11-year marriage to the goddess of Hollywood, Nicole Kidman, and another long-term romance with the stellar Penelope Cruz - the media and public cannot help but discriminate against the girl-next-door Holmes.
"This woman is a B-list star at best - and we're being generous there," says Reid. "Her show was not particularly a good show. Tom probably never watched the show. It makes him look ridiculous and silly that he has a relationship with this woman."...
Starting with the latest headliners, let's look back on some mix-list couples of the recent past:
KATIE HOLMES AND TOM CRUISE
Holmes: B-list actress who made her debut on the WB's "Dawson's Creek"; formerly dated fellow B-list actor Chris Klein. Supposed virgin.
Cruise: A-list superstar, two-time divorcé and father of two adopted kids. Often fighting rumors that question his sexual preference.
Together: Creepy and suspicious; possibly the strangest coupling since Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley hooked up.
BRITNEY SPEARS AND KEVIN FEDERLINE
Spears: Young, sexy A-lister of music on her way to becoming the next Madonna.
Federline: Back dancer/deadbeat babydaddy. It's safe to assume this dude belongs to no list, except maybe one for sperm donors.
Together: Horror of all horrors, as documented minute by minute in UPN's "Britney and Kevin: Chaotic."
DEMI MOORE AND ASHTON KUTCHER
Moore: 42-year-old A-lister with a waning career; formerly married to Bruce Willis with three children.
Kutcher: 27-year-old B-lister who debuted with "That '70s Show" and made his career with "Punk'd."
Together: Despite the constant jokes about their age difference, the relationship has stood the test of time. In a weird way, they actually work pretty well....
