To Keep His Pants Up
Dang AP/Yahoo!:
RIDGECREST, Calif. - Linc and Helena Moore may have finally learned the answer to that age-old question: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Because the chicken doesn't know jaywalking is illegal.
Kern County Sheriff's Deputy J. Nicholson...issued a ticket March 26 because one of the couple's chickens allegedly impeded traffic in Johannesburg, a rural mining community near Ridgecrest, some 220 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
The Moores were in Superior Court on Friday to plead not guilty. A trial was scheduled for May 16....
The chicken's owners say they believe they were cited because they were among several people who complained that sheriff's deputies haven't done enough to control off-road vehicle riders who create dust and noise in their neighborhood....
Now if a chicken were driving an off-road vehicle, I think everyone would agree that the chicken needs to be ticketed.
But Linc Moore may call upon his Friends of Jawbone brethren for help (emphasis mine):
Friends of Jawbone Meeting
Minutes
October 20, 2004
Jawbone Station
The meeting was called to order by President Ed Waldheim at 9:06 a.m.. Those present were: Paul Kober (CORVA), Craig Peterson (Supervisor McQuiston’s office), Bill Aberle, Marge Balfour, Linc Moore, and George Paniagua (interested public), Eric Hurtado (California City Police Department), Francis Moore (Kern County Sheriff Department), James Welling (Supervisor Don Maben’s office), Craig Beck, Hector Villalobos, and Steve Smith (Bureau of Land Management), Ed Waldheim (CORVA), Robin Mallow (Friends of Jawbone and Jawbone staff), and Margaret Harris (Jawbone staff).
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as written.
The treasurer’s report was approved as presented....
There was much discussion held and most of it concerned the fact that there is a lot of private property in the area and motorcycles are riding through in order to get to some of the more popular sites in the three communities.
Linc voiced a complaint concerning OHVers drinking and blocking the entrance to the post office and the fact that many of the vehicles did not appear to have green stickers.
More discussion was held concerning possible legal routes in the area. The business owners welcome the motorcycle riders but the home owners complain about the noise and the way some riders behave. Marge spoke to the fact that the residents of Red Mountain have nothing against the motorcycle riders but they do want them to stay on the trails. The speed limit on dirt roads near residences is 15 MPH. Marge stated that she would try to get the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors send a representative to meet with all concerned.
There was some discourse between Linc and Francis concerning Linc’s accusations that the sheriff is not doing anything. Francis explained that his people cannot be everywhere all the time. He has been working to alleviate the DUI problem in the area. Francis also reported that there will be 2 deputies stationed in Randsburg during the Thanksgiving holiday....
