Wilbanks Story Morphs Into Cop Lovers

Many people are quoting the Partridge Family and saying, "Point me in the direction of Albuquerque" - not because of the runaway bride, or her ex-boyfriend, but because of the police escort (heh):


Who is the gleaming blonde in the uniform?

Hundreds of people across the country wanted to know.

So they wrote to Trish Ahrensfield, 35, the Albuquerque Police Department spokeswoman thrust into the national media spotlight in the case known as "the runaway bride."

Letters praised Ahrensfield's calm compassion during interviews and her "caring face" in the widely circulated pictures of her escorting Jennifer Wilbanks through the Albuquerque International Sunport.

Most of the letters, Ahrensfield said, thumbing through her collection of more than 200 on Tuesday, are thank-yous and kudos for professionalism and kindness.

Others are requests for dates or rants against her and the department for not pursuing charges against Wilbanks....

"One guy called me a wimp and said we should arrest her. I told him that if we let him run the country we'd all be in jail," Ahrensfield said, waving the bad letter pile.

A few men who saw her numerous TV interviews e-mailed asking amorous questions, Ahrensfield said, giggling a bit....

[A]fter appearing on CNN, "Good Morning America," Court TV, Fox News, MSNBC, "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and "Inside Edition," she has started turning down interview requests, including one from Geraldo Rivera's staff....
