Since July 2002, Ellie Nesler has been prison in Chowchilla serving a six-year term for a drug conviction. Yesterday, her sister, Marietta Adams of Sonora, said Ellie Nesler is ill with "full-blown cancer."

Nesler was first diagnosed with breast cancer before being sentenced for the manslaughter conviction. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment while in prison.

In a prison interview in 1995, Nesler said her cancer was in remission. She was released from prison in 1997.

A spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections confirmed that Ellie Nesler is in the prison's skilled nursing unit, but declined to say why she is there, citing a policy against releasing confidential medical information on inmates.
