The Birth of Electronic Pop 1977-82
Made in Sheffield charts the cultural rebellion of Sheffield’s music scene between 1977 and 1982, from its simple beginnings to the international successes of The Human League, Cabaret Voltaire, Heaven 17 and ABC and the subsequent birth of electronic pop.
Created by local filmmaker Eve Wood, Made in Sheffield is a unique collaboration of rare archive footage and revealing interviews with the famous, almost famous and the not so famous, including Phil Oakey of The Human League, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh of Heaven 17, Stephen Singleton of ABC, Chris Watson of Cabaret Voltaire and John Peel.
Sheffield, a place were Kraftwerk has always been bigger than The Sex Pistols, was different from the rest of the UK, its post-punk music scene created diverse and influential sounds and produced some of the most idiosyncratic pop music of its time in front of a backdrop of unemployment and industrial decline. Their dream was to destroy rock music.
Loaded with endearing moments and humour, it captures the essence of the seldom portrayed aftermath of Punk and the spirit of the early 80’s British New Wave movement.
