I Thought It Meant "Universal"
While reading about Pope Linus, I ended up surfing to this page that attempted to divide "Catholics" into six groups:
there are basically 6 kinds of Catholics (capital "C") today:
- Old Catholics, or Pre-Vatican I Catholics. This is a religious denomination that split from the Roman Catholic Church in 1870. The founders of the movement...were deeply disturbed by the promulgation of the dogma of Papal Infallibility at the First Vatican Council of 1869-1870....
- Liberal Catholics, who...have become very liberal...with the exception of the Mass that they celebrate, still in old Tridentine fashion....The Liberal Catholic Church (LCC)...requires its clergy to accept the basic tenets of Theosophy (reincarnation, ascended masters, etc.) as well as Catholic Christianity, while the [Liberal Catholic Church International] LCCI requires only that its clergy accept the basic tenets of Catholic Christianity....
- Vatican II Catholics, or conservative Catholics, or Novus Ordo Missa Catholics ("New Order of the Mass" in Latin, or post-Vatican II Mass), the ones that see John Paul II as the Pope, and see nothing wrong with the Catholic Church since Vatican I and II....
- Pre-Vatican II Catholics, or traditional Catholics, or Tridentine Mass Catholics who are not sedevacantists (the word means "empty chair" in Latin, and it refers to the throne of St Peter in Rome), such as the people who follow the Society of St. Pius X....The majority of traditional Catholics, while opposing some recent Vatican decisions that they see as contradicting former teaching, still claim union with the Vatican Pope, and accept his authority.
- Pre-Vatican II Catholics, or traditional Catholics who are sedevacantists, but who are still waiting for a new Pope after Pius XII, the last "true" Pope. These Catholics are viewed as schismatic...since they generally view "Vatican II popes" (John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II) as antipopes....
- Pre-Vatican II Catholics, or traditional Catholics who are sedevacantists, and who have elected their own Popes....
Comments
I left the church for many years after the Latin Mass disappeared along with the crucifix, statues and the other embellishments of the church.
I now attend a church where we still have the Mass said with the altar facing the tabernacle and the priest turned away from the church memebers. We also kneel for Holy Communion and do not drink the wine (blood of Christ).
Our parishoners have a dress code, women must have dresses below the knees when sitting, men must wear proper suits, or if slacks, must not look as if they had been on the beach or working in the garden.
We are a very tight community. I love being there and we are waiting to see if this new pope can become our pope once more and restore us completely.
We are located in Wayne, Michigan and welcome newcomers. We are growing.
