Where's Harvey Levin When You Need Him?
Annie Jacobsen (remember her?) is still flying high (heh) with Women's Wear Daily Women's Wall Street. Although nothing has been published in the "Terror in the Skies, Again?" series since part 9 appeared in October 2004, she has started a new series, Annie Jacobsen Speaks Out. In truth, she turned up some interesting statistics and factoids:

There are 26 million veterans alive today and yet the Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) pays benefits and provides services to approximately 70 million people....When it comes to taking care of veterans and their families over time, the government's responsibility lasts far longer than you might think; the last dependent of the Revolutionary War died in 1911. And as of 2002, 439 children and widows of Spanish-American War veterans and six children of Civil War veterans were still drawing V.A. benefits....

[Staff Sergeant Georg-Andreas Pogany's] job was to drive an unarmored Land Rover through the notorious Sunni triangle. His sole companion in the SUV was a young support soldier who inexplicably recited rhyming couplets from Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham while waving his rifle barrel out the window....

Among side effects listed by [Larium's] manufacturer, Roche, are "anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia, hallucinations, psychotic behavior and possible suicide." All of these symptoms have been known to occur in otherwise sound-minded individuals. But most Larium takers, especially those in the military, never see the warnings about these dangerous side effects....

A July 2004 New England Journal of Medicine study...reveals that 16% of Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans studied suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), major depression or generalized anxiety. And yet, of those suffering, only 31% had sought help. Concern about stigmatization was cited as the overwhelming reason most soldiers refused to seek mental health care. Meanwhile, doctors stated that those who need it most are the ones who avoid care. According to United Press International, veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom are already occupying the beds of homeless shelters around the country.

P.S. Nour Mehana who?
