Other Countries Have Different Problems With Illegal Aliens

From Gulf Daily News:

THE number of illegal residents detained and deported from Bahrain more than quadrupled last year, it was revealed yesterday.

A total of 2,851 foreigners, more than 50 per cent of them women, were deported last year, against 621 in 2003, said General Directorate of Nationality, Passports and Residence investigation and follow-up director Colonel Khalid Abdulla Al Moawdah.

More than 1,100 companies were penalised for employing workers in breach of immigration laws, up more than 200 on the previous year....

More than 50 per cent of those deported were women, who were mainly involved in prostitution, said Col Al Moawdah.

There were also 682 free visa workers, who were arrested by immigration police during their regular patrols....

Hundreds of visitors who overstayed in the country were also repatriated to their respective countries, said Col Al Moawdah.

"The number of such people who were either repatriated or whose stay was legalised when they found sponsors with work permits, was 1,911 last year, against 1,248 in 2003," he added.

"We also took action against 1,181 companies and establishments which employed people illegally, against the country's immigration rules.

"We suspended their files and stopped processing their applications until they regularised their documents. The number of establishments penalised for such offences in 2003 was 950."
