It's a dead man's party

In the comments to this post, rev-ed asked the following question:

Just wondering for how many historic figures we "celebrate" the day of their death...

Julius Caesar
Jesus
I can't think of any others. Can you?

I added the following comment:

Elvis Presley.

I'm sure there are others.

Regarding Elvis:

Each August, Elvis fans of all ages from around the world gather in Memphis, Tennessee for Elvis Week -- a commemoration of the music, magic and memories associated with the legacy of Elvis Presley. Long-time fans and those who are new to it enjoy a full week of music, dance, sports, social and charitable events -- all in an atmosphere of international friendship and camaraderie. Most fans say it feels like a huge family reunion they all look forward to each year. Everyone is welcome. Everyone belongs. Everyone has a great time. Whoever you are or wherever you're from, if you're into Elvis, then Elvis Week is for you.

This is officially sanctioned by whoever controls elvis.com today - Priscilla or some investors or Tom Cruise or whoever.

Since I wrote the comment above, I've remembered that "the day the music died" has been celebrated in song (although Paul McCartney and the city of Lubbock ensured that Buddy Holly Day would be celebrated at the time of his birth, not his death).

Conservative Rebel suggested another celebration:

Today [March 14, 2005] is the 122nd anniversary of the death of Karl Marx, the communist thug who's ideas and beliefs have led to the deaths of hundreds of millions of people! Celebrate this wonderful occassion by supporting capitalism in anyway possible!

Top off your SUV's gas tank, pound back your favorite American beer, tune into Fox News, and thank God that the right wing of America has stopped the wacky liberals from turning this country into a socialistic communist hell hole!

Apparently, the Rebel didn't celebrate the 123rd anniversary. There have been no posts to the blog since May 2005. Perhaps the conservative rebel has become a neoconservative Beltway Boy. (Is it just me, or does that sound kinky?)
