helppakistan.blogspot.com changes its strategy

As I noted previously (in my 8 October post "Well, they got one out of three right - will Google get one out of one right?"), Dr. Awab Alvi's attempt to use Google AdSense as an avenue for charitable contributions in the Pakistani earthquake relief effort is against Google's terms of service for AdSense. As I said:

Incidentally, I wouldn't be surprised it Dr. Awab Alvi's efforts go for naught. Google AdSense can be sticklers on their TOS (believe me, I know), and they may cry foul because any effort to encourage Google Adsense clicks to raise funds necessarily runs afoul of the AdSense program policies....

[I]f you look at the letter of the law, this scheme violates Google's program policies big time, inasmuch as most of the people visiting the website have no true interest in staying at a Karachi hotel (even a good one), so one can pretty well document "potential inflation of advertiser costs."...

Other people apparently had similar concerns. Danial:

Dr. Alvi has setup a google adsense account to help earthquake victims, he is asking for clicks. I think this is not fair, this is illegal if you read Google Adsense’s terms and conditions. Also it is unethical because the advertisers will be paying that money for nothing.

Dr. Alvi himself posted the following at karachi.metblogs.com:

In the heat of the moment I honestly believed that using Google Ad Network would be a perfect method to generate funds but it has been brought to my attention from a few active readers of Karachi Metblog about a certain clause in the the Google AdSense network it states "shall not encourage/authorize a third party) to: "directly or indirectly generate queries" so my requesting you to click Google Ads would be deemed illegal...

TOS Conflict with Google AdSense

The campaign for disater relief started innocently enough, my effort was to raise a significant amount of funds for the Needy and deserving in this national tragedy.

Our goal of the campaign was to raise revenue quite innocently by asking people to click on the Google AdBox. Mashallah with all your help and cooperation until the filing of this report we had generated upwards of $70 only from Google. But sadly I have to announece that as per their "Fine Print" it is deemed illegal for me to ask you to click the ads. For this noble cause I now ask you to continue your efforts and donate via Paypal.

Coming up with a grand idea soon, wait up!!!!

Please Donate via PAYPAL

The PAYPAL link is in the upper right corner of his blog.

Thank you for the review - it was well composed.

As a proactive measure i wrote directly to google - acknowledging that i had done wrong, and had technically violated their terms but I asked them that since it was all for a noble clause if they would donate to ANY charity for the earthquake victims in Pakistan - have not heard any response from them as yet.

The effort was impressive as within 30 hours of operation we generated $67

I hope that Google does the right thing.
