More on McDonnell, and the Telegraph Project returns

In response to the news about McDonnell's firing from KSPN, I posted a comment in McDonnell's blog. Here's some of it:

...I've never worked in commercial radio, but I wouldn't be surprised if, when you open your mouth about this in early November, we hear about a lot of back-office egos. Throughout the entertainment industry, whether you're talking about radio, or television, or movies, or music, (or for that matter sports) we keep on seeing cases where the back office decides that they know more about art than the artists themselves. Yes, I realize (and you realize) that this is a business, and the business has to make money, but it sometimes seems like the All Wise ones (e.g. DePodesta) have wonderful ideas that blow up in their face, then they blame the artists for failing to execute a fouled-up plan.

And yes I hope you reunite with Doug also. Some teams are not meant to be broken.

I've looked at this a bit in my blog (I discovered the news via a Blogpatrol report of search hits), and may ruminate on this some more in the future.

Well, it's time to ruminate. While I was writing that comment, all sorts of things were popping into my head:

  • The interference that SNL has received year in and year out from the brass at NBC

  • Tony Bruno's departure from Fox, which has probably cost Fox more than Bruno wanted in a new contract, and which has reinvigorated a competing sports radio network to boot

  • The still inexplicable decision from AM 570 to save face in the post-Bruno era by dumping sports in morning drive altogether and airing Mancow, and dumping sports in the evening by brining in Phil Hendrie

  • The very fact that AM 570 became AM 570 (instead of AM 690), losing their San Diego fan base and slowly working to jettison Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton (I personally can't stand the guy, but others like him)

And those are just a few examples. You can fill in others. I'm forced to come to the obvious conclusion about the owners of the Los Angeles sports radio stations - they are slowly working to destroy themselves. Oh yes, they pretend they're capitalists (well, government-subsidized capitalists), but the owners' true goal is to ruin the businesses and usher in a Communistic radio era.
