Yeah, brick house. Mighty mighty. My older readers know. Just lettin' it all hang out. But let me correct a common misconception about the song:

Every band member contributed to the albums, but Lionel Richie - who by now was the group's primary lead vocalist- was responsible for writing the majority of the singles. However, the Commodores returned to their funky roots after Lionel's country-flavored ballad and mega-hit "Easy". On "Brick House", Walter "Clyde" Orange -who had handled both the skins and the lead vocals during the group's beginnings- did his thang. "Brick House" came out in August, 1977 and got to R&B #4 and Pop #5. "Clyde" was also the lead vocalist on the uptempo stomper "Too Hot Ta Trot", (R&B #1, Pop #24 1977)....

Orange, alone with J.D. Nicholas, also sang on "Nightshift," released after Richie's departure.

J.D. (James Dean) Nicholas, who replaced Johnny Wilder in Heatwave, met the Commodores during a taping of the American TV show "Soul Train". Nicholas came on board on what looked like a sinking ship, but in late 1985, the Commodores proved beyond a doubt that they still had what it takes to write a hit record. "Nightshift" was produced by Dennis Lambert (the man responsible for ex-Temp's Dennis Edwards' smash "Don't Look Any Further") and was to be the final Commodores' LP to sell gold in the United States (at least to date). The microphone was shared on the title track -by Orange and Nicholas- and the single raced to number one R&B and three on the Pop charts.

And the Commodores, now a trio augmented by other musicians, are still playing:

Grammy Award winners The Commodores formed in 1968 in Tuskegee, Alabama as a high-stepping funk group. The group got their break in 1971 when they began a two-year gig as the opening act for the Jackson 5.

Their string of hits such as “Machine Gun,” “Brick House,” “Three Times a Lady,” “Easy” and “Slippery When Wet” spurred them to become the largest selling act on Berry Gordy’s Motown Records, eventually selling more than 60 million records.

When co-lead vocalist, Lionel Ritchie, left the band in 1983 to pursue a solo career, co-lead Walter “Clyde” Orange and the band were left in search of a new singer. The band eventually chose J.D. Nicholas, formerly the vocalist for the British band Heat Wave, The Commodores’ opening act on a European tour. The 1985 release of the album Night Shift earned the group their first Grammy Award for the title track.

Other albums include United (1986), Rock Solid (1988), and Commodores Hits Volume I & II (1992). In 1993, the group released their 20th studio album, Commodores XX - No Tricks, which contained all new material as well as new musical and vocal arrangements of the smash hit “Brick House.”

The group’s current line-up features Orange (drums, vocals), Nicholas (keyboards, vocals) and original member William King (brass, vocals).

The Commodores are part of the Fifth Third Bank Concert Series at Jerome-Duncan Ford Theatre.

And by the way, what's with all of this Richie/Ritchie stuff? I always thought Richie was the correct spelling, but I've seen Ritchie so many times that I'm not sure any more. Lionel, what's your name?

And that reminds me of tragedy (no, I'm not going to morph into Bee Gees now - let me get my current reference out of the way).

Three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd died in a plane crash just 3 days after [Street Survivors] was released. The album had to be given a new cover, because the original one portrayed the group surrounded by flames.

I confirmed the three day timeframe:

They returned to the studio in April of 1977 and began laying down the basic tracks for what would become the "Street Survivors" LP. Then after a few weeks, they took a break from these sessions and launched another brief tour. To celebrate their newfound success, they had switched from their cramped tour bus to a chartered plane, which allowed them to travel more easily to their concerts. Inevitably, this aircraft was christened "The Freebird"...."Street Survivors" had already been certified gold even before its release on October 17th....Returning to the road immediately after the completion of the new album, the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were very enthused about their prospects for the years that lay ahead. They had good reason to be excited, as their future seemed very bright indeed. But it was simply not to be....

On October 20th, 1977, the band was traveling from Greenville, SC to their next show on the campus of L.S.U. They had no reason to suspect that anything was amiss as they boarded the plane and strapped themselves in for the flight. The Convair 240 was an older, propeller-driven aircraft and the band had always been somewhat unnerved when they flew aboard it. In fact, they had already decided that this would be their last flight on the aging plane. They were planning to purchase a Lear Jet for themselves and a new bus for their roadies....When one of the engines stalled in mid-flight, the crew panicked and made a fatal error. While attempting to transfer the remaining fuel to the opposite wing tank, they inadvertently dumped it all. Seconds later, the aircraft began to rapidly descend. The pilot tried to land in a clearing, but the wings clipped some trees and the plane crashed down in a swamp near Gillsburg, MS. Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed instantly, as the aircraft broke apart. Ronnie Van Zant was not wearing a seatbelt, so he was thrown forward and buried amidst the mangled fuselage. Cassie Gaines had been so pleased when her brother Steve had joined the band because she was able to share the music that she loved. So perhaps in some tragic way, it is fitting that they died together. The crash also claimed the life of Dean Kilpatrick, Skynyrd's road manager. In the blink of an eye, the promising future of the band was snuffed out....

Wonder if Alina likes "Free Bird"? I've always envisioned (probably because of the lyrics of Talking Heads' "Electric Guitar") a cast of thousands of Chinese Communist guitars, all playing the "Free Bird" solo in unison. If Phil Spector weren't having problems at the moment, he could make it happen.
