Robertson Links Clark Stroke, God's Wrath
From N.I.T.A. Media/Ersatz Press:
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson announced Friday that television personality Dick Clark's stroke was divine punishment for Clark's promotion of dancing on his former "American Bandstand" show.
"The Bible tells us that God punishes those who do not follow His ways," Robertson said on his TV program "The 700 Club" on the Christian Broadcasting Network. After citing examples of others who have been punished by God, including Ariel Sharon, Yitzhak Rabin, Rock Hudson, Jimmy Swaggart, and Billy Graham, Robertson stated, "Let us not forget that all reputable Christian authorities agree that dancing is un-Biblical. Dick Clark disobeyed the command of God, and God struck Dick Clark down and raised Regis Philbin and Ryan Seacrest in his place."
Clark, who suffered a stroke in 2004, was unable to appear on his annual New Year's show in 2005, and only appeared in a limited capacity in 2006. Philbin substituted for Clark in 2005 and appeared on a competing network in 2006. Seacrest, one of the stars of "American Idol," co-hosted the 2006 show with Clark and has been designated at Clark's successor.
Robertson continued, "Let the example of Dick Clark serve as a warning to those who disobey God's Word. More calamities will take place in the future in advance of the revelation of a prominent Democratic politician as the Antichrist."
Other Christian leaders were quick to denounce Robertson's interpretation of current events. "Robertson is out of line," stated Dr. Charles Wesley McVeigh of the Progressive Christian Institute of California, a leading mainline theological seminary. "The Bible records an instance in which David danced before the Lord. Not that we believe in the Bible, but I thought I'd mention it anyway."
Other leaders, however, were quick to support Robertson's interpretation. "Pat Robertson is obviously one of the wiser Crusaders," stated Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "Dick Clark was a promoter of evil Western music and should be punished."
"Dick who?" asked Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez when asked about the controversy. "I only listen to Menudo and that Xuxa woman."
Robertson spokeswoman Angell Watts simply stated, "Look at the response that we gave the last time Robertson made a Bible-based statement. Our response still applies."
