Will Bob Parsons Lose Money?

From nykola.com on February 7, 2005:

Surprisingly, New York Daily news called GoDaddy's ad one of the worst. Unfortunately, taste doesn't count in these matters. Not only did GoDaddy's banned version get publicized in the media, the whole Janet Jackson spoof has put their company name in the spotlight. The irony here is that I'm giving them publicity too. Up until now, I liked them as a company. Safe to say, they won't be getting my business anymore.

In the comments area, she stated the following:

Can't remember who said it, but changing my site's registrar isn't that big of a deal. It's a simple procedure. When it's time to renew, I won't. I've changed around a lot so I don't have any particular attachment to GoDaddy. I'm not fighting a battle here folks. I'm just not doing business with them any more. Simple as that. Just like some people won't buy KFC, won't shop at Wal-Mart, etc. I'm not too interested in patronizing a business that would choose to sell sex so explicitly. Parody or not. Some things just aren't worth pardoying.

Dave J. and Ambra had the following exchange:

I'm a Christian. I'm even...a dreaded conservative Christian. (gasp!)

But I think some folks are really wound WAY TOO TIGHT on issues like this. Pick your battles. A "GoDaddy.com" commercial with no nudity and mild sexual innuendo (at best) doesn't strike me as something to go on full-attack mode for.

I'm not sure Christ would want believers spending exorbitant amounts of time 'outraged' over pop culture's inability to grasp modesty.

Um, who's battling? Opining? Yes. Battling? No.

Of course, this all begs the question of Ambra's current registration status:

Registered through: GoDaddy.com
Domain Name: NYKOLA.COM
Created on: 06-Dec-02
Expires on: 06-Dec-05
Last Updated on: 29-Mar-05

In Bob Parson's blog, James commented on the whole issue and took his guess as to whether Ambra would follow through:

when the ads aired this year, i remember a bit of an uproar in the blogosphere. one blog-entry i made a note of was this one. you'll note that the author closes by saying that godaddy wouldn't be getting her business any more, i added a note to my calendar on her domain's expiration date to see if she follows through with her threat and doesn't renew. my guess is that she won't - people use godaddy b/c of the price, customer service, and ease of use. i doubt that a (effective, imho) commercial will drive them away.

Ambra herself has only made one further statement on the matter:

GoDaddy's Boobs Pay Off
It seems the Superbowl publicity stunt paid off. GoDaddy is now the top registrar of domains. Yawn.

And James has made the following comments on his own blog:

personally, i think it would be great if godaddy could say f-u to abc and refuse to advertise. in my ideal world, other vendors would follow suit, ad revenue would drop, viewership would fall off, etc, and abc and the nfl would "learn their lesson." but realistically, we dont live in my ideal world. the super bowl is "the place to be" for advertisers. censorship or not, godaddy can't afford to *not* advertise, if they're looking for that kind of exposure.

To be continued...

Actually, Yahoo! is cheaper. My domains are set to auto-renew so GoDaddy got one more year of my dollars on nykola and a few others.

Everything's slowly being changed over to Yahoo! Domains however. I own about 36 domains. It's a long process.

Nice try though McGruff the Crime Dog.
