Finally tracked down the Van Earl thing
I finally got the answer to my question, thanks to radio-info.com.
Here are portions of the first thread on this topic:

Is it just me or does FOX not know how to do radio?
I feel Stein is an empty-headed moron. Say what you will about VEW but he does have heartland appeal.
If they are getting rid of VEW, they are getting rid of the wrong guy on the Morning Extravaganza.
I rarely listen to the show now because I can't stand Sisliano- not VEW.
I can honestly say I would NEVER listen to it if Stein took over. Just too many unfunny smart allecks for my taste.

Anything is an upgrade over VEW. Those of us who grew tired of him and the rest of the sub-par FSR hosts won't be back anyway. Two possible reasons for the change: 1. FSR affiliates dropping the show and 2. An attempt by Ashwood to save his behind. Even in Ashwood's old stomping grounds, San Antonio, the VEW show has been cut back to one hour. I've heard Stein do updates on the World Poker Tour on XM and those are painful at best. It won't be too long until Stein's trademark, "winner-winner chicken dinner" causes listeners to start slashing their wrists.
But Heather1 found the confirmation, along with a long biography.
David Stein joined Fox Sports Radio as a weekend host in July 2004. David began his career in the suburbs of Philadelphia as a stand-up comedian where he still owns one of the longest running comedy clubs in the country, David Stein’s Reading Comedy Outlet, in Reading, PA. For 10 consecutive years, David was loved (at least listened to) by hundreds of thousands on heritage Y-102 FM before his move to national syndication, with a 50 share in females 25-54 and 40 share in males, plus….#1 in every other demo. David can also be heard nationally with his 6 day a week sports, pop culture, and current event talk show, “On The Line with David Stein”. David has also just signed a deal to host radio features for the World Poker Tour and a weekly show for Stuff Magazine. Winner of several awards for radio including First Place Awards from UPI and The Philadelphia Press Association, David has broadcast LIVE from big-time events such as: The US Open Golf Championships, The Masters, US Open Tennis, The World Series, the NLCS, The ALCS, The Democratic and Republican National Conventions, The presidential Inauguration, and the Olympics. His play-by-play duties have included baseball, football, and the American Legion World Series. David hs highly active in giving back to the community, hosting The David Stein Easter Seals Golf Classic, serving on the boards of chapters of The American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy and Easter Seals. In addition, David is the host of The Los Angeles Rescue Mission Easter Day Celebration in downtown Los Angeles. David is single and lives in Los Angeles.
