And today in Singapore...

Here's the latest smuggling news:

A man was fined more than $1,200 for attempting to smuggle duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore.
Immigration officers arrested the Singaporean man at Tuas Checkpoint on Sunday.

He was accompanied by his wife, sister-in-law and a two-year-old baby.

Officers found 20 packets of duty-unpaid Salem Menthol cigarettes, hidden inside a tissue box placed near the rear windscreen of his Singapore-registered car.

The man told officers that the cigarettes were for his personal consumption.

He was referred to the Singapore customs and was subsequently fined $1,239.80.

But don't worry; Singapore will remain vibrant:

Singapore must reinvent itself into a vibrant global city to stay ahead of the competition, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in his National Day Rally....

New York, Dubai and London are just some cities that are constantly reinventing themselves.

And Mr Lee says Singapore needs to do the same to compete....

For Singapore to stand out, Mr Lee says that the key is not to build another tallest building or the biggest mall, but to capitalise on what is unique to the island -- and this includes bodies of water and lush greenery.

So within the next five years, Marina Bay will be developed into a new waterfront city.

The Business and Financial Centre will be a landmark with mixed-use developments including residential blocks.

It will also be the site of one of the integrated resorts.

But a major attraction will be a huge green lung of three world-class gardens featuring different themes, at Marina South, Marina East and Marina Centre.

These gardens, which will cover about 90 hectares of land, will be linked by bridges to form a public waterfront loop that is part of the Marina Barrage....

The Bras Basah-Bugis area is also undergoing a facelift.

With its eclectic mix of old and new developments, the area is set to become even more vibrant as an entertainment and education hub.

The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore Management University and the National Library have already opened their doors, with the La Salle-SIA College expected to be completed next year.

When this happens, there will be 14,000 students to inject youthful creative energy to the area....

Mr Lee said, "The city must reflect the spirit of our people -- well conceived, vigorously executed, restrained but high quality, every aspect thought through, constantly being improved and remade in search of excellence. A city in our image -- a sparkling jewel, a home for all of us to be proud of, a home that belongs to all of us."
