Timely - Get Ready INDEED
Flipped on ESPN and caught some more World Series of Poker action, which inspired me to visit the official website.
The events that ESPN are currently televising actually happened some time ago, and the new poker season is in full swing:
Tunica circuit report: August 11-25, 2005
The 2005-2006 WSOP Circuit Event season kicks off at the Grand Casino in Tunica, Mississippi
Circuit Event: Grand Casino Tunica
Location: Tunica, Mississippi
Riding on the momentum of the 2005 World Series of Poker, the 2005-2006 Circuit Events have started off with a bang. Crowds of poker players have been filling the Grand Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. While circuit event winners don't receive one of the famous gold bracelets, they do receive gold rings -- and, of course, thousands of dollars in winnings. Who knows which is the bigger draw at this point?
So a casino in Mississippi...wait a minute. But THAT casino is OK.
Casino operator Harrah's Entertainment Inc. said Tuesday that casinos it operates in Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss., have sustained "extensive damage" from Hurricane Katrina, and that a third casino in New Orleans will be closed for at least four weeks for repairs....
Six other properties Harrah's operates in Louisiana and Mississippi -- Harrah's Lake Charles, Horseshoe Bossier City, Harrah's Louisiana Downs, Grand Casino Tunica, Horseshoe Tunica and Sheraton Casino & Hotel Tunica -- are fully operational.
Poking around, I found this announcement, which in retrospect was rather timely:
Grand-Tunica makes donation to Red Cross
August 10, 2005
TUNICA — Grand Casino Tunica recently presented a check for $10,000 to the Mid-South Chapter of the American Red Cross for the “Get Ready” Emergency Preparedness campaign. The donation was a collaborate effort of corporate giving and funds collected in a wishing well located in the main gangway entrance to the casino.
The Get Ready campaign booklet includes such information as how to assemble a disaster supply kit, basic first aid, coping with disaster, evacuation plans and emergency contacts. Also included are detailed planning instructions for specific types of disasters including fire, floods, winter weather, tornadoes, earthquakes and even acts of terrorism. The intent is to give residents the information they need to respond with confidence to a variety of emergency situations. The information shared through Get Ready is pertinent to every individual in the Mid-South, regardless of age, race, income level or social status.
The collection efforts will continue through the end of September.
No word as to whether Harrah's has relaxed its makeup requirements for its employees.
