APTA working with Premier, Ministers to clear trucks

TORONTO , Ont.— The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association is currently in talks with New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord as well as Minister of Public Safety Wayne Steeves and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Percy Mockler in its ongoing efforts to clear New Brunswick highways of independent truckers protesting low haulage rates.

At 4:30 p.m. today RCMP still had not moved to clear the blockades, and trucks were backed up from the Quebec border as far east as Perth Andover along the Trans-Canada (Hwy. 2) and as far as the Miramichi region along Hwy. 11. Hwy. 17 is also blocked to truckers.

Blockade participants claim they belong to the North Western New Brunswick Truckers Association – a group which is believed to consist primarily of independent raw forest product haulers.

“They're allowing passenger cars to pass but they're stopping all trucks and asking them to sign a petition supporting them,” said APTA President Ralph Boyd.

The APTA is asking truckers to avoid venturing onto the affected highways. Truckers who are stopped are advised to park their trucks and avoid confrontations with the protesters.
