The one drawback of Yahoo! groups, et al, is that you have to get an account with the entity that offers the group. This does not appear to be the case with SmartGroups:

Group members can email the Group, add events and files and create votes and lists (depending on the Group policies set up by the Group manager). SmartGroups members can create and join as many Groups as they like and Groups can be publicly visible or totally private.
