Massive Non-Trendiness (I'm Rerun, Bitch! And I'm Dead!)

This Blogpatrol hit mystified me: 26/07/2005 13:20:05 Fred Berry from what's happening in casket at funeral (AOL) The first thought that popped into my mind - did this actor attend Rick James' funeral? Bear in mind that I never watched "What's Happening," so I couldn't tell Fred Berry from Fred Flintstone - well, actually I could (I don't think that Fred Berry was white or wore a loincloth), but that's beside the point. In a former job one of my co-workers supposedly looked like the guy with the glasses on "What's Happening," but as I write this I have no idea which character was which. Maybe that was Fred Berry; I don't know. But CNN could tell me in this 2002 article: Though he may not be able to jump-step as high as he used to, Fred Berry, the actor who played good-natured dancing machine Rerun on the late 1970s sitcom "What's Happening!" and its 1980s spin-off, "What's Happening Now!," can do his shar...

Darwin Fish doesn't like anybody : If you are involved with the kind of Christianity that views the "church of Christ", or Billy Graham, or Rick Warren, or James Dobson, or Pat Robertson, or John MacArthur, or Tony Evans, or Greg Laurie, or Charles Stanley, or Chuck Smith, or Fred Price, or J. Because, you are on the broad way (Matthew 7:13; 2 Peter 2:2; 2 Timothy 4:3). You have not the characteristic of Christ's sheep (John 10:5). And, men such as these are wells without water (2 Peter 2:17).... [Charle...

More Criticism of Me Generation Theology

Followup to a prior post that dealt in part with criticism of the Four Spiritual Laws. Here's something from Rich Vincent at theocentric.com (you can already guess this site's views on 4SL): Following are a few examples of popular contemporary attempts to communicate the gospel: The Four Spiritual Laws. This presentation consists of four simple statements: (1) God loves you and offers a wonderful plan for your life. Man is sinful and separated from God. (2) Therefore, he cannot know and experience God’s love and plan for his life. (3) Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin. Through Him you can know and experience God’s plan for your life. (4) We must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God’s love and plan for our lives. The Roman’s Road. This presentation involves stringing together a series of texts from Paul’s epistle to the Romans. The following passages are usually cited: “For all have sinned and fall short of ...

Checking my Blogpatrol stats, and it's clear that Danny Bonaduce's dismissal from KYSR (Star 98.3) is still resonating in the immaterial world. Reparations Deux and the New Four Point Bible

Just a little while ago I wrote about how some people justify a lower tuition rate for illegal immigrants. Basically, the argument is that the parents of the illegals wronged them by bringing them here illegally, so they need to be compensated in some way. Kinda smacks of the whole reparations controversy, in which the government should give money to the descendants of slaves as reparations for the crime visited upon their ancestors. Those who pooh pooh the notion should note that, according to David Dreiling, the LORD agrees : Last Sunday, July 10th, on the day Hurricane Dennis made landfall I asked the L-rd, "What's with all these hurricanes?" To my amazement He instantly responded to my question. He said, "It's all about Slavery". "What?" I inquired? The L-rd simply explained to me that the hurricanes in question all form off the west coast of Africa and wreak havoc only upon those territories that were originally built through the institution ...

Uh Oh, Part Twenty Seven

From The Tennesseean : Country singer Mindy McCready...been charged with five crimes in Arizona in connection with helping authorities catch an alleged con artist.... "I understand that she helped the authorities in Arizona take down a con artist that conned her and 35 other celebrities, and she also helped the authorities in Florida identify him," [McCready attorney Dennis] Tomlin said. "She did not know that she had been charged … period. She was under the impression that with her assistance in taking down this con artist, that she was free and clear," Tomlin said. McCready is charged with two counts of unlawful use of transportation, one count each of taking the identity of another, attempted fraudulent schemes and artifices, unlawful imprisonment and hindering prosecution. McCready is scheduled to be arraigned in court in Mohave County, Ariz., on July 29. In May, McCready was arrested in Belle Meade and charged with driving under the influence and driving on a s...

Plain Old "Down Home"

On June 4, 2005, Roman Grecco of WUSR 99.5 FM aired his regular "Grecian Formula" radio show. His theme, apparently, was "Home." Here are a few of the songs from his playlist for that day: Fine Young Cannibals Johnny Come Home The Finest MCA Supertramp Take The Long Way Home Classics Volume 9 A & M Records Catherine Bach Down Home American Girl The Dukes Of Hazzard Volcano Ozzy Osbourne Mama, I'm Coming Home No More Tears Epic The Beatles She's Leaving Home Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Parlophone/Apple Fats Domino I Want To Walk You Home My Blue Heaven : The Best Of Fats Domino(Volume One) EMI He forgot one . From the Ontario Empoblog

More On "Down Home American Girl"

More info to add to this . Not all of the reviews are universally positive. Miserable Melodies : Remember Daisy Duke from the TV show Dukes of Hazzard? Well, this is from the (gulp) soundtrack. She doesn't quite hit the notes... Another from Blogcritics : And you'll finally be able to put that question you've had in your head for a long time now - who's the better singer - Catherine Bach or Jessica Simpson? You say you weren't wondering? Well ... the answer may surprise you. (Yes, it's Jessica, though she had better material than Bach's "Down Home American Girl," a hokey moment in a surprisingly sincere soundtrack first released in 1981 that has stood the test of time). I am dyslexic and have a deviated septum. Give me a government grant and free cheeseburgers.

Speaking of Lonewacko ... Is Orrin Hatch (R-UT)'s explicitly anti-American Dream Act going to be reintroduced in coming months?... That Act gives illegal aliens discounted college educations. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens who haven't established residency in the state where they attend college would continue to pay the full price. That's right: a citizen of another country who's here illegally would pay less than a citizen of this country. Lonewacko has previously received comments justifying the practice. Basically, it boils down to "two wrongs make a right" (and "no, no, you LOST the war"): Students who were brought here at a young age, did not choose to enter the United States illegally. Many of these children do not realize they are violating immigration laws. It is not until they reach that age when they find themselves thinking of their future. They dedicate their whole life to do well in school and dominate the English language. It is only fair to...

Catherine Bach Sings (or at least she sung)

From Blogcritics.org : The Dukes of Hazzard: Original TV Soundtrack somehow slipped past me....Originally released in late 1981, this “soundtrack” of a television classic is being re-released by RCA/Legacy, this time with two bonus tracks.... It’s...a collection of songs performed by the show’s cast members, three country music legends and Doug Kershaw. And it’s all tied together by short vignettes narrated by both Boss Hogg and Roscoe P. Coltrane to create a flimsy, yet somewhat plausible storyline.... Of course, this wouldn’t be a Duke boys album without a song or two by Bo Duke himself, John Schneider. And Bo doesn’t disappoint. He really has a great singing voice and it’s showcased here on two tracks: “In the Driver’s Seat” and “Them Good Old Boys are Bad.” And not to be outdone by Bo, Tom Wopat makes an appearance with one of the most recognizable, and worst, performances I’ve ever heard of The Band’s “Up on Cripple Creek.” I know that Tom is an accomplished singer and veteran of ...

Just an excuse to mention Dick Clark and Danny Bonaduce

From Reuters/Google (Yahoo! is having problems): Mario Lopez has been named the co-anchor of "ESPN Hollywood," ESPN 2's new show looking at the intersection between Hollywood and the sports world.... Lopez is perhaps best known for his role as A.C. Slater in the '90s teen sitcom "Saved By The Bell." But Bonnell noted he has a background in athletics as well as talk shows. The San Diego native was a high school wrestler. He's also been a co-host of the NBC syndicated talk show "The Other Half" (with Dick Clark and Danny Bonaduce ) and has hosted Animal Planet's "Pet Star." In May, Lopez became a host as part of the morning drive time show on the Los Angeles radio station Hot 92 Jamz. [OE 1/6/2006: Did God strike Dick Clark down for promoting dancing? Spell Czech, Earlier This Week

Quoting myself : ...The frustrating thing is when people DON'T realize they need an editor. Earlier this week, my company's PR department issued a public statement to our customers that referenced the "critical roll" that our product plays in their operations. I gently pointed out to the PR person that our product plays a critical ROLE, not roll. (We are not a food company.) It's perplexing . If I were younger, I'd get uptight about it, I guess. Wow. I am disappointed.

You would think that with my repeated use of the term "baby seal clubbers," that I would appear near the top of a Google search for those words . I didn't even make the top 30 (although my comment in DadTalk did). So who was rated above me? Maxim , for one: Thank you, LABOR UNION ABORTIONIST DRAG QUEENS/CORPORATE FAT-CAT BABY-SEAL CLUBBERS. And a very special thank-you to our party sugar daddies, HOLLYWOOD SUCK-ASSES/BIG-TOBACCO BACK-SLAPPERS, for funding this expensive event. You won’t be forgotten. It’s a real pleasure to be here at DEPRESSING FACTORY/DEPRESSING ARMY BASE, condescending to all you WORKING RABBLE/MILITARY DUDES. I, JOHN KERRY/GEORGE BUSH, stand before you today, a candidate for the presidency of the United States of America.... If you perform a Google search on Annika , you will find that the Annika who author's Annika's Journal is second on Google's list. Golfer Annika Sorenstam is third. So who's first? No wonder Ed didn't talk. He's a fisherman.

Found this at a fly fishing website: Joining up with the Carlson's, Lou Metzler from the Longview club and his wife, we would be staying with Dick and Barbara Maugg in a rented house while Dick is completing the construction of his final Baja hideaway. Dick, best known as the laconic "ED" in the Bartle and Jaymes (Gallo) wine cooler commercials , an avid fly fisher and member of the Steamboaters, is a friend of Dave Carlson's, and I had already met and fished with Dick for steelhead on the Deschutes. Frank and I toasted each other for a successful 9 1/2 hour flight while waiting to be picked up and stripping down in the heat. Eventually Dick appeared in an old orange pickup. He suggested we go down to the beach in front of the hotel and see what the charter boats were bringing in.... Dick spoke spanish with several of the mexican charter skippers and gave us his fishing report. "They had 90 degree water temperatures last week with really drove the big schools...
