Jim North and Oliver Morrison
So I'm reading L.A. Observed and see a post about the death of Danny Sugerman, famous for his biography of Jim Morrison, No One Here Gets Out Alive - the book that raised the possibility that Morrison may have split to Africa and faked his Paris death.

L.A. Observed links to related stories in Rolling Stone, Billboard, and the Hollywood Reporter. According to the latter publication, Sugerman also wrote a book about Guns N' Roses.

L.A. Observed published this tidbit:

Sugerman is survived by his wife, Fawn Hall, who came in for some notoriety herself in the Iran-Contra scandal during the Reagan Administration. She was the secretary to Lt. Col. Oliver North on the national security staff at the White House.

From Jim Morrison to Oliver North. Well, Jim DID come from a military family.

To jog your memory:

In two days of testimony, Lt. Col. Oliver North has contradicted key assertions by major figures in the Iran-Contra affair, including President Reagan, Attorney General Edwin Meese III, and late CIA Director William Casey.

He also disputed a number of lesser figures including Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams, former National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane and Duane Clarridge, a senior official of the CIA's clandestine service.

North said Wednesday that it was Casey who knew perhaps before anyone else of North's plan to divert money from the sale of arms to Iran to the Nicaraguan Contra rebels, saying the late director praised the idea as "the ultimate covert operation." Before his death early this year, Casey had told investigators he learned of the diversion only last October.

North also testified that Meese had known virtually since the time of the November 1985 shipment to Iran arranged by North that the contents were deadly HAWK missiles. Meese, however, has said he did not know until he conducted an inquiry into the unraveling affair on behalf of Reagan a full year later, in late November 1986.

North contradicted McFarlane's earlier testimony that he instructed North not to solicit money for military aid to the Nicaraguan Contra rebels from third countries and private U.S. citizens, and said it was McFarlane who suggested making misleading entries in the White House chronologies of events.

The Sandwich Shop offers these comments:

The first book I remember falling in love with was No One Here Gets Out Alive, a biography of the drunken, bloated and dead Jim Morrison by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugarman. I must have re-read that book a dozen times in my early teens. That the book is almost worshipful of Morrison, who turned out to be a world class prick, is beside the point. It's chock full of wonderful tales of fuck-upery that I'm drawn to even today....

As much of a fuck up as Morrison was, Sugarman outdid him by a long shot. He was befriended by Morrison when he was 13. Sugarman became the admiring Robin to Morrison's drunk and horny Batman. When Jimbo finally had the good grace to die, young Danny devoted his life to becoming every inch the car-wreck that Morrison was and more....

While Jim Morrison was merely drunk, obnoixious and pretensious, the former James Ostenburg was actually psychotic. Sugarman did what came naturally. He became Iggy's manager. Oh yeah, and he did a lot of heroin, too....

As a means of taking a break, Sugerman took the time to fuck Morrison's "widow" and marry Iran/Contra hottie, Fawn Hall....

By the time Danny married Fawn, he had gotten off heroin. So what would be a better honeymoon destination for a recovering junkie? Thailand, heroin's hometown. The results were as predictable as they were amusing. Except that Fawn, as wives are famous for being contrarian, preferred cocaine. Hilarity ensued.

Fawn Hall and cocaine? Appears so, readers...

Since Rush lives in Palm Beach, speculation has arisen that he stayed close to home for his rehabilitation, mostly likely at Hanley-Hazelden. As has always been its policy, H-H declined to comment on client identities, but we do know about some, from outside reports or from the patients themselves.

Two years ago, Palm Beach County Judge Robert Schwartz gave up his seat to be treated at Hanley-Hazelden for a similar painkiller addiction. In 2000, the New York Post reported that fading baseball star Darryl Strawberry tried to kick his coke habit there. Back in 1994, Fawn Hall, former loyal assistant to uber-loyal Marine Ollie North, reportedly entered H-H's outpatient program and worked part-time at a Palm Beach Gardens bookstore. Former Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry is another alumnus, and actor William Hurt and political wife Kitty Dukakis found help at Hanley-Hazelden's Minnesota campus.

A broad spectrum - jocks, politicians, office workers, entertainers, liberals, conservatives, Dittoheads and Deadheads. When it comes to substance abuse, they're all in the same boat.
The syndicated tabloid TV show ``American Journal'' plans to broadcast a story Monday about Fawn Hall, the blonde beauty who smuggled Iran-Contra documents in her dress when she was Oliver L. North's secretary.

Don't think Fawn will be stumping for votes.

``Oliver North turns his back on Fawn Hall, and she's mad,'' reads the headline on an ``American Journal'' news release pitching the show.

``The story of the beautiful secretary who defied the U.S. Congress for her boss and now can't even get him to come to her wedding.''

``American Journal'' couldn't get an interview with Hall, who is reportedly battling a drug problem.

But producers say they have ``caught her on exclusive video'' at the Florida clinic where she is recovering....

``Her stunning good looks captivated millions of television viewers,'' the release said.

``Now, she's a bit heavier, her trademark `Farrah Fawcett' hairdo is gone, and she has a decidedly unglamorous day job in a book store.''
Fawn Hall admitted cocaine use, simply proving she was a loyal customer of her beloved Contras.
